Abstract

The relationship between collective housing and the city is intrinsic, since housing is a constituent part of the urban fabric,  influences population distribution, and its configuration determines aspects of the interplay between private and public spaces. In this sense, gradualness and permeability emerge as inherent conditions of material definitions in relation to the context, and to "what is allowed to pass through" into the interior, and therefore what is "left out." This requires consideration during the design process. This article proposes an approach to collective housing from a perspective that aims to provide criteria to help generate suitable living conditions within an urban framework, with an emphasis on defining guidelines related to transitions between public and private spheres. This implies addressing the complexity of the relationships between habitable units, movement systems, access and egress, boundaries, proximity, common spaces intended for residents to spend time and meet, among other aspects that define the articulations between public and private living. These aspects are presented with a focus on contextual interaction variables. In this sense, the aim is to generate conceptual contributions related to the requirements of each collective housing unit, in accordance with the changing dynamics of its environment. The methodology employed is observation and critical analysis of design experiences, which facilitates the analysis for proactive reflection and, as a utilitarian outcome, the material production of habitats with contextual coherence.
