ABSTRACT
This paper presents a spatial-temporal analysis and simulation of agriculture in the Culiacan Valley, Sinaloa, Mexico, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The state of Sinaloa has the first place in food production in the country, in fact, the capital city, Culiacán, is based in one of the most prolific agricultural valleys of the national territory, mainly covering the municipalities of Culiacan and Navolato. The agricultural areas in these municipalities constitute 52.6% of the area, almost 450,000 hectares of cultivation, of which 34.3% is irrigated agriculture and the remaining 18.3% is temporal agriculture.
In order to carry out the study, the maps of land use and vegetation of 1993 and 2011 are used, and based on these, are proposed two scenarios of simulation (trend and sustainability) by 2030. The results obtained shows that the greatest dynamics occurs in temporal agriculture and in irrigation agriculture. In this way, the trend scenario was generated, where the most significant transitions occur from rainforests to temporal agriculture and
to irrigated agriculture and humidity; and from both agricultures to human settlements. While in the sustainability scenario, the main transition occurs from temporal agriculture to the rainforests, followed in less quantity, by the one of agriculture of temporary to grasslands. These scenarios are very useful in the management, planning and prospecting of the territory, integrating a participatory and adaptive vision to the governmental ordi-
nances on the future projections of the region.

Keywords: GIS, future scenarios, multicriteria evaluation.
ER -
